London London London

Well here I am in London. I've been looking forward to this time for months- and now it's here. From the moment I stepped outside the airport I could tell I was in a foreign place. I think half of it was my imagination but when you want to be aware of how things are changing it's much easier to notice.

At first glance London doesn't seem that much different than New York City, but I've come to notice so many things. I think the easiest difference to pick up on is that London doesn't have skyscrapers. There are tall buildings, yes, but none more than 10 stories. I am living in one of the tallest buildings in my area and have a great few over top the roofs. Here is my list of top 10 differences between NY and London.

10. People drive and walk on the opposite side of the street/sidewalk
9. There are a lot of old style cars, and the taxis are all different colors.
8. The traffic lights on the side of the street.
7. Instead of pavement, there are a lot of brick and stone slab paths.
6. There are actually phonebooths everywhere- not just the red ones but others too.
5. There are other coffee shops besides Starbucks.
4. Delis charge you extra if you want to eat your sandwhich there as opposed to taking it to go.
3. Places close early- restaurants and bars close at 11 or 12, and clubs at 1 or 2.
2. There are no billboards, except under bridges and in poor areas of town. Instead there are men standing with bright signs with arrows pointing toward the said place.
1.There are no power lines. The only thing lining the streets are lamps.

It's hard for me to make a completely accurate comparison because I've never spent more than one day at a time in NYC. When you live in a city you experience a lot more things than when you are just doing a day trip. Not only do you have a chance to see all the famous sites, you experience public transportation and normal things like grocery shopping. OH... and yeah, they arent big on peanut butter here- there was only one kind in the store. I miss my Peter Pan Peanut butter.

Wow, such great observations! I'm surprised the clubs and restaurants close early (that's actually the same time in Hartford though). I'm shocked they have so many phone booths (our country must be run by Cingular), and even more confused as to why they charge you more to eat IN at a deli. That stinks.

I also think you're smart in saying that living in a city is different than just visiting it. You're going to learn a little of what it's like to more than just a tourist of England, which is so cool.

I'm so happy for you. This is SUCH a great oppertunity!
